Big Bang is Still Killing It...

...and they haven't even released their album yet.  Craziness. I told myself yesterday that I was going to relax on the Big Bang posts for a bit because I was starting to feel like a Big Bang fansite, not that that's a bad thing.  THEN... they release something like this: "Bad Boy" teaser- Source:  BIGBANG

EXO Is Always At The Airport: A Fashion Retrospective

It's true.... The members of EXO-K and EXO-M are ALWAYS at the airport.  I'm never sure where they're going or what they're going to be doing when they get there, but I'm forever seeing the pics.  There's often some major fashion moments taking place in these pics; some good, some bad but always notable.  Enjoy: This post is image heavy

So You Were Wondering What EXO's "Wolf" & "Growl" Drama Version MVs Are About? Pt. 1

It has come to my attention that people are confused as hell about EXO 's " Wolf " and " Growl " drama version MVs, and have been since they came out.  Well, it's your lucky day, because I'm here to explain the shit out of them for you, in the way I know best: I'm going to tell you a little story.  Fyi, this will be done in two parts, so bear with me.

Video of the Day: SHINee's "1000 Years, Always By Your Side" PV

Today's Video of the Day is by none other than my faves, SHINee, who bring you their pv for "1000 Years, Always By Your Side".

I have to take a pause here because I have so many feels (and too many screencaps, aigoo!) to express about this incredible video.  Take a look:

Firstly, lets talk about the characters SHINee plays in this video, because that plays a huge role in really getting the story line.  A friend of mine informed me that they are playing Shinigami (click through for her point of view), or a "death god" or "death spirit".  As Wikipedia says, Shinigami:

is an entity in Japanese folklore that is responsible for seeing that a person dies at their appointed time and then guiding their spirit to be judged in the afterlife.
I realized after watching it the first time that they were some sort of more benign version of the Grim Reaper, so learning about the Shinigami made a lot of sense.

So, a few days ago I let you know just how much I like this song.  Well, the mv has now dodged past all my other favorite SHINee videos and situated itself right at the top of the list.

Everything about this pv is on point, from the cinematography to the wardrobe to the smallest details imaginable.  Let's talk about the cinematography first.  I'm no expert but I think the cinematography here is so well done.  The sepia tint that is used to illustrate the difference between the realm that SHINee lives in and the "real" world is used skillfully.  It serves to really bring the Shinigami's world to life.

I thought that the juxtaposition of the modern and the old fashioned in their clothing was excellent.  This concept also served to highlight the differences between the living and the dead.  Even their accessories were chosen wisely.  I loved Key's keys and book, as well as Taemin's umbrella and Onew's cane, the watches and the monocles.  You got the sense that they were not just props but items that would be used in their day to day life as Shinigami.

Now about that story...  From the first few shots I was hooked.

Shinigami Taemin waits.

Those shots really set the tone and mood for the storyline, and what a storyline it is.  I was immediately drawn in to the world of these death spirits and the man they were waiting for.  I loved how this deceased man wanted so badly to make sure his son was ok as he went through his operation.  The director managed to convey a strong loving family bond with just a few scenes, which is pretty hard to do.

Some movies don't even manage to do that in 2 hours, so good job director.

I liked how the Shinigami kept watch on the family by shapeshifting into cats and that the boy could see them.  Just five black cats, out and about, chillin'... nothing odd about that.

The part with the balloons particularly made me stop and think about the message of hope and not giving up that the father was trying to impart to his son.  I'm not a sentimental person but it almost brought a tear to my eye.  The father was able to go on from this life knowing that he had been able to bring a smile to his son's face for the last time.

The Shinigami were there to help him and the other spirits on their way.

"Fighting!"

Congrats, SHINee, on an excellent video and song.  I couldn't be happier and I'm sure many Shawols feel the same way.

Stay tuned on the Oddness/Weirdness Facebook page for more edited screencaps (coming soon) and to the Oddness/Weirdness tumblr for gifs and extra goodies.  Be sure to leave me a comment with all your "1000 Years" feels below.

  3. Beautiful video I agree. Love the Magritte references. The song reminds me a bit of some of the later tracks that the British group Take that release.

  5. This was a good Review. I agree the finer details are all looked into in this PV. Did you know theres going to be an extended version of this for 3 days? http://shinee.jp/kuroneko1000/ Looking forward to that too :) SHINeegamis are super cute here and the vocals are just to die for. Can you read Japanese though? because I really want to know how the father died (even though the PV and the article made it pretty clear he was a clown by profession, that died in a carnival fire) and why the son is getting a surgery done. I want to know if its related and i think the news paper article at the end of the PV in Key's book explains it :) <3

  6. Well thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Double thanks for the info... I just saw people posting it on twitter and yet you told me about it earlier today... Don't I feel special. :)

Sadly I can't read Japanese or Korean. I wish I could've read what happened to the dad. I figured he died in a fire but it totally makes a lot of sense that he was a clown, now that I read your comment. Aren't you observant??

I'm so excited to see the long version. Once again thanks for letting me know and I hope you visit again soon! I'm about to post about it and I'll credit you.

SHINee Struggles With "Replay" On Music Bank's 700th Anniversary Special

SHINee was on KBS's Music Bank today for the show's 700th Anniversary Special .  The boys performed a special stage of their forever classic " Replay ", along with " Why So Serious? " and if you haven't at least watched the "Replay" stage, you should.  Take a look:

Full Scans + Interview From G-Dragon's Incredible Vogue Korea 17th Anniversary Editorial

Ok I knew that G-Dragon 's editorial for Vogue Korea's 17th Anniversary would be amazing but these kind of exceeded my expectations.  I am in awe of the depth and clarity of Hong Jang Hyun 's photographs and of the stylist's vision.  The makeup artists did a great job too.  I'm not saying I like them more than I like GD's 2009 Vogue Korea editorial but they come pretty close, especially the first photos, which I'm calling "G-Dragon in high fashion grunge Rivendell" (where the elves lived in Lord of the Rings ?  No?  Alright, I'll admit I'm kind of a nerd).  Scroll down for scans of all 32 images and the full interview translation.  You're welcome!
